After posting a birthday invitation on Facebook, an Australian teen was forced to cancel her house party after she received more than 200,000 RSVPs in what appears to be a hijacked Facebook event.
The 15-year-old girl, identified as 'Jess,' had posted her address, cell phone number, and home phone number in the invite for a sweet sixteen party on March 26.
It's an "open house party as long as it doesn't get out of hand," Jess had written in the now-defunct Facebook invite, according to The Daily Telegraph. She also encouraged friends to bring other friends from her Year 10 class she didn't have time to invite, AFP reported.
Fox News said the hacker coalition known as Anonymous may have been behind the hijacking, since some comments on the invite reportedly included Anonymous' logo. A 17-year-old boy was charged last night for his alleged involvement.
Jess' father told a local paper that his daughter was an "innocent victim" of a "complete hoax." .
She had only invited a few friends, he said, and didn't know how to use privacy settings on Facebook to block strangers from viewing the party invitation.
"She was just anxious about whether anyone would show up to her birthday," he told the Daily Telegraph.
But within 24 hours the Facebook invite had more than 20,000 RSVPs and an unhappy Jess cancelled the show: "it's f***in off." .
